  1. Goodbye Borders Books

Today was the final day of sales at my local Borders, which also doubles as my place of employment, though I didn’t know they were closing when I first got the job months ago. The interwebs do know best. I feel all sorts of crazy about this obviously our economy and the dollar are things to think about in relation to any business closing but the money just isn’t in the books. The only word that comes to mind is: modernism.

Sometime in 2007, NY Times owner and publisher, Arthur Sulzberger stated

”I really don’t know whether we’ll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don’t care either. ”

I don’t let the NYT feed me, so I could care less too- but this is telling of the state of print. Yes we will survive, adapt, and children will learn to read on Ipads. Our handwriting will worsen; mail services will only be used for online purchases. This is the modern world take your bookbinding classes while you can!

In fun books news Peter Mendelsund updates Kafka covers with a minimalist twist!
